Drabble: Trick

When the armored and masked Imperial Guard entered the prisoner's holding cell, he dropped a heavy sack on the floor and locked the door behind him. The prisoner had been asleep on the cot, but he startled awake almost immediately. Ruane noted that he moved as if one of his ribs were broken, and other various scrapes and bruises indicated that Ruane's orders to leave the supposed rebel in isolation until he arrived had been ignored. He muttered a curse.

Ruane's tone was clipped and no-nonsense, with a strong upper-class Coruscant accent. His voice, however, might have been recognizable to the rebel, even through the filters on the helmet. "Get up and put this on. You're leaving."

Cassian Andor's eyes narrowed at the Guard. "Why?"

Ruane reached up and pulled the helmet off, revealing the features that Andor had become accustomed to seeing on a certain Corellian smuggler. He changed his accent slightly, to sound more Corellian, but he didn't follow through with Folan's brash, annoying banter. "Would you rather stay? I can let the interrogators back in." He unzipped the bag, revealing a second set of red Imperial Guard armor. "I have a shuttle waiting."

Ruane could see the questions in Andor's eyes, but he reached for the bag. Once he was dressed, Ruane frowned, then handed him a force pike. He slipped his own helmet back on and grabbed his electrostaff. The bag that Andor's uniform had been in, he folds up and slips into a pocket under his flowing red robes. In that same upper class Coruscant accent, Ruane said, "Let's go."

No one was in the hallway or the turbolift, for which Ruane was thankful, but two stormtroopers caught up to them before they reached the hangar. The ranking stormtrooper snapped to attention in front of Ruane. "Commander Ruane! Sir, our patrol reports that the rebel prisoner escaped his cell. We have patrols out now looking for him. No one has left the ship."

Ruane sighed. Of course, this once they did their jobs correctly. "Are you sure this isn't some ruse to cover your commander's interrogation of the prisoner?" He let a bit of anger seep into his voice. "My orders were clear. No one was to talk to the prisoner until I arrived. If I hadn't had to leave to find a medical droid, I'd have been in there interrogating him now. Find the prisoner, at once, then have your commander speak with me. My Master will want to have a few words with him."

"I...yes, sir. Right away." The stormtroopers saluted, then hurried off.

Ruane held up a hand to cut off any questions Andor might have had, then he motioned to the disguised prisoner and they approached a shuttle reminiscent of one the Emperor preferred. The hatch was open and it was very obviously empty. Once they were inside, Ruane locked the hatch and pulled the helmet off. He didn't bother with the Corellian accent, it was pointless anyway. "Of all the bloody, incompetent...strap in, I can talk us out of here. I promise, I'll explain once we make the jump to hyperspace."
