Allegiance assumed to have remained with the Sith Emperor. Ruane disappeared from Imperial space shortly before the Yavin 4 and Ziost incidents and only recently reappeared in Darth Exedo’s employment.

“So, what do you think, commander?”

Ruane watched the damaged skytrooper crawl along the floor towards its weapon. After the beating he had inflicted upon it, that it could move at all was impressive. “They’re very resilient, but until we can alter their behavior, a restraining bolt and the removal of their long range communication abilities renders them little more than novelties. Have you had any break-throughs?”

Jaroste shook his head. “No. I’m working on it, but it’s going to take more time to locate someone who can figure it out. They’re very complex.”

Ruane frowned. “Keep working, then, but don’t neglect the other projects. We have enough guards for now.”

“Yes, commander.”

Commander Phelan Ruane

Contains spoilers for Knights of the Eternal Throne.

Commander Phelan Ruane is a former Imperial Guard and former Imperial Navy war hero. Born on Ziost to a family of wealthy merchants from New Adasta, Ruane was sent for military education on Dromund Kaas from a young age. Joining the Imperial Navy at the age of 18, he started out as a pilot during the war, but rose up the ranks, eventually gaining notoriety for fighting toe-to-toe with Force-trained Selkath during a battle over Manaan. His prowess caught the attention of the Imperial Guard and by the end of the war, he served in the Guard. Ruane aided in Imperial operations on Corellia and Ilum.

Ruane disappeared from Imperial space shortly before the Yavin 4 and Ziost incidents and only reappeared once Zakuul attacked, in the employment of a relatively young Darth. Ruane was given command of the Sith's military training facility, earning the ire of the Darth's apprentices. Several apprentices were listed as killed in action shortly afterwards, and neither Ruane nor his Sith patron have ever commented on the matter. Ruane and his men assisted the Alliance in its fight against Zakuul, though it is noted by Sith Intelligence that they disappeared during the final days of the Eternal Empire.

With the demise of the Sith Emperor as well as the rumored death of Ruane's Sith patron, his allegiance is unknown, but presumed to remain with the Empire, as Ruane and his men have been spotted on Dromund Kaas in the company of various Sith.

History

Ruane's family were wealthy merchants living in New Adasta, on the planet of Ziost. Very few members of the family had ever been able to boast any talent with the Force, and even fewer completed Sith training. Lacking influence with the ruling Sith or a higher social standing, Ruane's family sent several of the family's youngest children to a military academy on Dromund Kaas, in an attempt to keep them from competing with their siblings for the family business, later. Young Phelan excelled in his training and joined the Imperial Navy at the age of 18, as a pilot. He rose through the ranks quickly, eventually gaining notoriety as a young ensign aboard a destroyer during the battle over Manaan, when he fought toe-to-toe with Force-trained Selkath. The feat caught the eye of the Imperial Guard, and he was brought to one of their training facilities in order to be evaluated and trained. By the time of the Treaty of Coruscant, Ruane was fully trained and inducted into the Imperial Guard.

He spent the years before the Treaty was broken serving the Emperor, preferring more active combat or clandestine missions to bodyguard work. Once the Treaty was broken and war renewed with the Republic, now-Commander Ruane fought on Corellia as well as Ilum before retiring to Yavin 4 with his unit in order to aid in the resurrection of the Sith Emperor. When the Order of Revan invaded and took control of the Temple, only a handful of Guards under Ruane's command remained. They never rejoined the Imperial forces, led by Darth Marr, but instead carried out their own raids on Revanite forces, only relenting when it became clear to them that the Emperor was awake once again. They did not retreat to Ziost to be with their Master, but instead focused on gathering their remaining forces. They began construction on a new training camp, far enough away from any remaining Imperial and Republic patrols that it would not be noticed. When the Emperor sapped all life from Ziost, it was felt, and it gave hope to the remaining Guard. Several of the lesser-known members of the Guard were dispatched back to Imperial space, where they secretly funneled recruits to the new training facility.

They spent five years on Yavin 4, training a new batch of recruits. Ruane was the one who convinced his Sith patron to ally himself with the Alliance and then publicly bring the former Guards into his power base and claim their makeshift base as a training facility for the Sith's personnel. Ruane and the Darth had more of a partnership than a master and servant relationship, and on at least two occasions Ruane proved that, alchemically enhanced, he was the Sith's match in combat. Ruane and the military forces under his command at the Yavin facility provided security for the Sith's facilities on Nar Shaddaa, and undertook missions for the Alliance against targets in the Eternal Empire.

Note from Sith Intelligence: The Sith that Ruane and his men served is listed as killed in action on Odessen, along with a good portion of the Sith's apprentices. Ruane and the former Imperial Guards under his command have not maintained their support of the Alliance, but instead have moved their offices to Dromund Kaas and have been seen in the presence of various Sith. Motive is unknown, but it is suspected that Ruane and his men seek either a new Sith patron or an audience with Empress Acina.

Weapons and Combat

Electrostaff, training in other weapons and combat styles. Primary weapon is a Selkath-style electrostaff. Usually carries a stealth generator and personal shield generator, as well.

As with all Imperial Guards, it is recorded that he used to possess a link with the Emperor that allowed the Emperor to control his mind and allowed Ruane to channel some of his Master's power. That power made the Guards a force to be reckoned with, even for powerful Sith. In the time since the Emperor's death, he has been recorded on holo using a few minor Force techniques to enhance his speed and strength or torture prisoners. Whether that is because of the Emperor's meddling or some other reason is unknown but presumed to be due to some form of Sith Alchemy.

Note: The normal red armor of the Imperial Guard is well known, but Ruane and his men have also been spotted in variants of typical Imperial uniforms and armor. Coloration is typically white with red accents. Usage varies, but often is due to a hazardous environment or various mission requirements.

Occupation

Former Imperial Navy. Former Imperial Guard. Former Alliance-aligned military commander. Current occupation unknown.

Habits

Ruane has a reputation for cold and ruthless efficiency that is only partially warranted. Tends to go easier on non-Imperial Guard under his command, though he also holds enough of a bias not to trust non-Imperial Guards with important missions or information unless absolutely necessary.

Enjoys fine wine and theatrical productions when off duty. Tends towards more expensive civilian clothing when out of his armor. Tends to keep living and work space extremely neat, possibly due to early military education. Fluent in the Sith language and grudgingly fluent in Huttese, though very rarely deigns to speak it.

Note: Seems to have acquired a taste for otherwise cheap Corellian alcohol and often chooses spiced ale when in a cantina.

Has been recorded as being fanatically loyal to the Sith Emperor in the past. He has given no indication that this is still the case, but it has been noted by Sith Intelligence that he very rarely enters or stays in Imperial space, except under orders.
